ACTION FOR AUTISM
Is delighted to announce a series of workshops for the month of November 2013
at
Pocket 7 & 8, Jasola Vihar. New Delhi 110025
So much to teach the child with ASD.... how does one decide what are the skills to be targeted right now? Which goal is essential, which one is desirable and what one can put on the back burner for now? And beyond the current targets and goals, what should the broader curriculum be?
This Diwali, we bring you a series of workshops that will answer these questions and meet the unique needs and challenges of children with ASD.
Hurry & block your calendar!!!
Functional Assessments: Strengths and Needs
Thursday 14 & Friday 15 November 2013
1:00 – 5:00 pm
Individuals with autism are often a surprise package. They suddenly do or say things that we never thought they could/would. At the same time, they often stumble over little hurdles that we’d expect would be easy for them. An IQ assessment may not necessarily provide the answers. Hence there are other options we need to tap.
This workshop will focus on assessing skills of children with autism and other developmental conditions, the strategies used, standardized tests available and Indian adaptations for the same.
Registration Charges:
AFA Members(Parents/Professionals): INR 1200
Non Members(Parents/Professionals: INR 1500

’ by Juliet Reynolds (published by Hachette) has been organized by the Doon Library Research Centre on Wednesday, 6th November 2013 at 5 pm at the Regent Hotel, on East Canal Road.

EMPOWERING MY CHILD: A TRAINING FOR PARENTS
29– 31 January 2014, 9:00 am– 5:00 pm,
The National Centre for Autism,Pocket 7 & 8, Jasola Vihar. New Delhi 110 025
If you have a child with autism, are a professional who works with them, or are just interested in autism and have missed our Annual Training Workshop: KNOW ME TEACH ME; here is another opportunity that will help you understand autism and the child with autism better, and empower you to help the child learn more effectively.
Autism is perhaps the most complex and misunderstood of conditions. Professionals as well as parents can feel flummoxed as to how to help the child reach the maximum potential, and often feeling inadequate, helpless and disempowered.
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP?
This workshop will help participants understand the world of autism from the child’s perspective. It will explore the approach to teaching keeping in mind the varying learning styles; and ways to keep the learning process an enjoyable experience while learning any skill - communication, social, cognitive, self help and so on. More importantly the workshop will examine why and how to make accommodations for people with autism and how to preempt behaviours turning ‘challenging’, and finally explore practical strategies to address ‘challenging behaviours’ if they do occur.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP?
The workshop is for anyone who lives, works and/or interacts closely with persons with autism: young or older children, adults, newly diagnosed and those diagnosed years ago; for those in special needs schools; those in regular schools, and those in no schools; for those learning to use a blackboard and those appearing for their boards. The workshop is for anyone who believes that teaching the child with autism is not about fixing a square peg in a round hole, and subscribes to the maxim ‘_If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn’__ _
Please complete the attached registration form and send along with the registration fee.

Festival Report 2014
“ I shall eat alone. I can do it. You please go to another table.” This is what a child of 5 years told his mother on the second day of the festival. Mother was surprised and happy. She told me that she left him alone in a workshop and so he reacted that way. I was also happy that young boy grew up in one day to wean himself away from Mother and taking care of himself.
Two young men , adults, whom I have never seen laughing, had a good laugh at the workshop, rehearsals and performance at the Velvi Art for Autism Festival. Their workshop with Naree Shields a facilitator from Australia involved slapstick comedy, physical humour and entertaining themselves and entertaining an audience. At the performance these two young men played lead roles in I am the Boss and A Taxi Ride. The audience enjoyed and laughed with them. Great fun moments during the performance. They helped themselves with make-up and they let go themselves.
The three day Velvi Art for Autism festival 2014 started sharp at 9.30 a.m on 17 Jan.2014. District collector who had agreed to grace the occasion, could not come because of a law and order issue. The Festival was inaugurated by Ms. Shaloo Sharma, head Pallavanjali, Gurgoan.
Fr. Immanuel of the Pauloti Brotherhood blessed the gathering and Dr. Parasuram Ramamoorthi welcomed every one.
After the simple inauguration workshops started. There were workshops on Art, Movement, Music, grooming and Image Management, comedy and humour, drama. Every day they worked for 6 hours with sufficient breaks for Tea/ lunch and Time out sessions.
Participants were divided into children, teens/adults and parents and simultaneously sessions were conducted for all of them. 18 families participated in the festival with their children.
Parents were given a special session on Nutrition and Autism by Dr. Saravanan, a naturopath.
Highlights of the Festival:
1. Comedy and humour workshop and a final performance for the first time in the autism universe.( am not aware of any such workshops anywhere in the globe)
2. Special photography workshop by internationally known Photographer Senthil Kumaran.
3. Autism and Nutrition workshop for parents
4. Grooming and Image management workshop by Ms. Indu Venugopal and Rose from Bangalore for teens and adults
5. Besides these, art, movement, music and drama workshops were held. All the facilitators worked towards the performance.
6. Ms. Shaloo Sharma helped parents realize their artistic potential. Shaloo is the Head of The Pallavanjali Inclusive school at Gurgoan.
7. Zill Botadkar, Director of the Lighthouse foundation trained the kids in Movement.
8. Naree Shields from Australia brought in a fresh air of laughter and humour at the festival.
9. Kavita Kumar Dhoon Foundation trained kids in Music.
10. Benzy Kumar entertained the audience with her musical genius.
11. Karthik Rajaram and Viji Priya worked on Mask therapy with children.
12. Dr. Parasuram Ramamoorthi worked on Mirror Neuron activation through Drama with teens and adults, besides organizing the festival.
13. Senthil Kumaran did a workshop on Photography for interested parents and adults.

Hello and Greetings from Action For Autism!
AFA is a not-for-profit organisation that pioneered the autism movement in South Asia. The United Nations on 19 November 2007 declared 2nd April as World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD)
which is a historical marker for the autism community throughout the world, a large section of whom till today remains invisible and outside the ambit of basic services suited to their needs.
WAAD
is being celebrated by the autism community across world.
One of the major attractions at AAJ will be an Art Carnival and Free Consultation Camp at the India Habitat Centre amphitheatre. The Art Carnival will be between 9:30-11am while registrations will begin at 9:00am. Complimentary stationery shall be gifted to all the children
